Some of central Iowa’s toughest challenges include: Essential Needs – 24% of central Iowa households spend more than 30% of their income on housing; Early Childhood Success – Polk County has lost over 1,000 licensed child care openings since mid-2022; Education Success – 26% of central Iowa high school graduates do not have a plan for the future; Economic Opportunity – 20% of central Iowa households could not survive a short-term loss of income; Health & Well-Being – 47% of Iowa adults with mental health needs are unable to receive necessary treatment.
